We often hear the phrase “your network is your net worth,” but I’d offer this addition: your network is only as valuable as your willingness to be genuine within it.
I’ve always believed relationships are like trees. Some are deeply rooted; others are just starting to grow. But no matter where they begin, the goal is never just to plant—it's to branch out. To expand thoughtfully, consistently, and most importantly, authentically.
As a leader, I’ve seen firsthand how the most meaningful connections often start not with a bold pitch, but with a sincere conversation. A shared story. A mutual goal. Whether you're mentoring a student, meeting a future business partner, or simply reconnecting with someone you haven’t talked to in a while—authenticity builds the bridge.
So how do we grow more branches without feeling transactional?
Lead with listening. Relationships flourish when we’re more interested in understanding than in being understood.
Follow up with care. A thank-you note, a relevant article, or a simple check-in goes further than most realize.
Be consistent. Don’t wait until you need something. Nurture your network in the everyday moments.
Because at the end of the day, we don’t just build networks—we build people. And in return, people build possibilities.
